What Does The World Need From You?
What does the world need from you?
It’s the start of a brand new year and for many, as musicians and creatives, you have goals and dreams. There are things you want to see happen in your life. Progress that you hope will be made. The problem is that too many times we get burnt out, experience failure, or just decide to lay on the couch binging Netflix and then wonder why this year isn’t any different than the last. Trust me, I’m not bashing Netflix binging because I’m an expert. In fact, we can discuss shows over margaritas if you want! But it’s very easy to get caught up in the work and forget one important factor that plays an integral part in what we do.
For me, something changed a few years ago when it came to my writing, speaking, and any other creative outlet I use in life. I began to ask the question - what does the world need from me? The idea that our life matters and that we each have something to offer the world really resonated with me and changed the way I saw my work. I know that phrase gets tossed around a lot, but I know it is a resounding truth that gives meaning not only to our work, but to our lives.
What I love about Nashville Offbeat is that it showcases those who might not always be in the spotlight. Those who choose to do things a little differently. If you haven’t “made it” in the industry, you might wonder if it’s worth it. Is the hustle, the late nights, all the hours of work you put into your craft really worth it? I’m here to tell you that YES it is. Why? Because there is a world out there that needs to hear what you have to say. They need to listen to your music and read your words and see the light that shines from your life because you are doing what you are meant to do. No one else can do that but you.
The world also needs your work because they are watching you. In a city like Nashville where everyone is searching for their big break, we are all paying attention. When others see you hustling after your goals and dreams, making mistakes but getting back up, and seeing results it causes them to ask the question - if they did that with their life, what could I do with mine? Chances are, you saw someone living out their dreams and it caused you to ask that very same question. Now it’s your turn to do the same for someone else. It’s a beautiful picture of how the world works and how we are all much more connected in life than we realize.
So as you think about 2018 and what you want to see happen, never forget why you are doing this. Never underestimate the power of what is possible in your life and how the world needs to see it. Let that serve as your motivation to keep going, because there’s a world out there that needs it!
