How Do You Eat An Elephant?
How do you eat an elephant?
As musicians and creatives, we have big goals and dreams. We are wired this way - to want to accomplish big things in our lives! Whether it’s making the album or booking the tour. Maybe it’s writing the book or landing a spot in the pilot tv show. We don’t want to simply do small things or settle for average; we want more.
But so many times, the big dreams seem overwhelming. We look at the final outcome and then look at where we are now and it seems like those two places are a million miles apart. Many times we never even start because it just seems too hard. The voices of doubt and insecurity speak loud and we convince ourselves that it can’t be done.
I’ve accomplished a lot of big goals and dreams in my life. I’ve run a marathon, written a book, gotten my Master’s degree, and done other things that seemed really overwhelming before I started. The common theme on how I achieved all of these was that I broke them down into very small goals and started crossing them off one at a time. The only way I could run a marathon was to run two miles one week, then three miles the next week. The only way I could write an entire book was to write one chapter at a time. Lord knows the only way I earned my Master’s Degree was to take it one class at a time.
If I had looked at these goals in their entirety, I never would have done it. But could I commit to writing one chapter of my book? Yes! Could I tell myself to sit down and write 500 words of a chapter? Sure! All of these smaller goals seemed much more doable and eventually I had accomplished the big dream! Small steps lead to big leaps in your life.
So what is your big goal or dream? I encourage you to write it down, and then start writing down the smaller goals it will take to see that dream accomplished. Break it down into small, very doable tasks and you will be amazed at how it all comes together. Once it’s written down and you have some sort of a plan, you gotta start. Stop talking about it and start doing it one small step at a time. Cross those small tasks off and you’ll build the momentum to keep going! If you need help, feel free to reach out and I’d love to offer some guidance in taking big dreams and breaking them down into small goals. The exciting part is that one day what you thought was impossible will now be a reality in your life!
So the question is - how do you eat an elephant? It’s simple. You do it one bite at a time.
