Nashville Offbeat first heard American Folk artist John Dennis perform at Vinyl Tap in May, and immediately fell in love with the honesty of his lyrics and the heart-felt performance that carried them. He doesn't perform with bells and whistles or a stage persona, but he doesn't need to. The charm in his style is that, as an audience member, you can tell that he's just being himself.
John expresses the ups and downs of his life through the lyrics and music in his upcoming album "Second Wind." One in particular, "Walls Fall Down," is a beautiful song about relationships and emotional baggage. John took us through the story when we sat down for a short interview:
"Of all the songs on the record, that one came the fastest. I had the pieces of some songs for a while, but that specific song was done in about fifteen minutes. It just came out.
I was starting to date a girl at the time. We were together for a while. It was the first few dates, and I remember we'd meet up and have a good time, but we were both coming to the table with a bunch of emotional baggage. We were both damaged by relationships, and neither of us were strangers to the fear and hesitance to get into something new. We had been taught that it all ends in pain.
So we would hang out, and the dates were great...really light-hearted and refreshing for both of us. And we'd hit it off, but when it was time to go home or leave, you could just tangibly feel these walls come back up. It was just...we were back to dealing with ourselves and what was there in the first place.
So the song was written at 2am when I got home one night. It ended up being exactly what I wanted to say. Let's let the walls fall down, and lets give this an honest shot. It could be something good. It was written to her, but it was at least equally applicable to me in that situation, and I didn't realize it until she pointed it out, but my walls were also coming up. And walls are subtle. It seems like there are levels of them. A wall could come down, and there's another one behind it. So that's what the tune is about. Let's give life and love a shot, but be ready for that risk."
