Irenka has a voice that takes you to a timeless space in a modern time. This past Friday, July 14th, Nashville Offbeat went to a Bastille Day celebration in the heart of Green Hills at local deli Little Gourmand. People walked down a lane of boutique shops, decked with strings of small French flags hanging above their heads, to be engulfed in a crowd of over 100. There were children running around in colorful dresses and berets, as well as adults sipping on wine and nibbling on cheese plates.
Standing on the stage was a beautiful vocalist in a bright red dress and black leather boots. Everyone in attendance turned their eyes to Irenka. The Belgian artist began with a cover by Zaz, a song familiar to the French-speaking audience. The lyrics and melodies flowed effortlessly from her in a nonchalant, yet powerful fashion, transporting the entire crowd to another time and place. It was truly an experience to behold!
Accompanied by a wonderful band featuring upright bass, violin, and guitar, Irenka needed no other instrumentation to make her voice shine throughout the late afternoon. The simplicity of the three piece band was perfect for both her sound and the vibe of the community gathered together in celebration.
Irenka plays out often around Nashville. She plays both French classics as well as her original Pop/Soul/Dance music. You can find her music on Soundcloud (Dreamland is Nashville Offbeat's favorite!). Check out her website, www.blackswanworld.com, and follow her on Facebook to keep up with her journey!
I love how stripped down this song is. In a world full of over-production and being as loud as you can, “Sidewalk” is an easy-breezy breath of fresh air.
“What’d You Think” was performed, recorded, and shot live on Delmarva Life TV in Maryland earlier this year. I found their performance to be full of passion, emotion, and life.
For instance, the band laments the trials and tribulations of dating a vegan: …
You’re in the sky, grazing the moon with your hands, rearranging stars, and smiling wistfully. This is where my mind takes me when I hear “Are You The Girl” by Kira Hooks, just released on April 17th, 2018.
With a little bit of sass, blues, and rock n’ roll, Lauren Anderson is bringing us a song reminiscent of early Grace Potter. Released March 30th, “The Game” is a head-banger that will pump you up and empower your day!
Released on April 17th, I find “Body Language,” to be timeless, sexy and beautifully produced, and think that you will too.
Capturing the essence of drama, the pain of heartbreak, and the freedom of letting go, “Strangers” is a beautifully written song about the romantic tragedy of losing a part of your identity in someone else.
He’s waiting for a call from someone in an emptiness that extends beyond his physical being.
One of my favorite songs on the album, “Just Wanna Meet You”, puts into words the longing we all feel to find someone to live our lives with. The idea that there’s a person out there meant just for you is one that brings comfort to all the hopeless romantics of the world.
The video features the band playing in Somer’s garage/rehearsal space, cut with kaleidoscope-like outdoor and driving scenes, giving an overall feeling of psychedelic displacement and trippiness (you may want to break out the sticky-icky for this one, gang).
