Song Review: Paola Proctor's New Single, "Tongue Tied," Has Everyone Speechless

As heard recently on Lightning 100, “Tongue Tied” is a brilliant example of local singer/songwriter Paola Proctor’s musical capabilities.  In the first 30 seconds alone, you get the start to a killer story, ridiculously catchy melodies, and a pep in your step.  I first met Proctor over coffee a year ago to talk about her first EP, “Verbal Ontology.”  While that’s a wonderful EP, I’m impressed to see how much she has grown as an artist in such a short time!

Have you ever been in a situation where you knew what you wanted to say, but when you felt ready to say those words, something completely different fell out of your mouth?  I know you have. In fact, that’s more often the case for me.  What I love about Proctor’s new single is that it captures that feeling perfectly.  She sings about letting the wrong words slip out and then going back over them in her head, after the fact, re-living the conversation with the words she meant to say.  “Tongue Tied” is catchy, danceable, real life.

I enjoy that the song moves quickly, making you really feel it, and then ends before you realize it’s over.  It’s powerful because that’s how it feels when you know what you want to say and the moment passes.  The instrumentation behind the story she tells is prominently upbeat and groovy, leaving plenty of space for her clear voice to fill the gaps with the perfect amount of attitude.  A driving guitar and drum beat create movement, while the bass in the pre-chorus gives definition to her words about “pouring gasoline on quite a short fuse.”  And then there are the horns!  Having them in the chorus and bridge adds so much flavor to the song and really makes me want to dance and sing along.  My only sadness about “Tongue Tied” is that I want it to be longer than 3 minutes.  Lucky for us, there’s repeat. ;)

To stay in touch with Paola Proctor, follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify!  “Tongue Tied” is available on Spotify, iTunes, and any other major music platform you use.  She will be playing her first full-band Nashville show on June 20th at The 5 Spot for the Nashville Offbeat showcase, as well!  Come out to support her and two other amazing acts from 6-8:30pm.
