Song Review: Friday James Shows Us "Who We Are"
As we grow up, we evolve. We become stronger and smarter, we experience life for the good and the bad, and eventually we give in to our authentic selves and become "Who We Are."
"Who We Are," by singer/songwriter Friday James, captures the evolution of growing older without losing a sense of who you were in the beginning. James woke from a dream one night with "Who You Are" in her head, and as any prolific songwriter would, she got out of bed to write it. Even without knowing this bit of information, you can hear the dream-like influence. The intro leads with a recurring motif of calm- almost hazy- harmonies that wrap you up in a blanket of sound to prepare you for her easy melodies and meditative story.
The song doesn't stop being beautiful with the melodies and story-line. I love the way the drums entered in the beginning. You barely hear them. Instead, you feel them grab your attention and redirect you just slightly as an acoustic guitar and bassline become present. An electric guitar flows through the space in the song like it was written in from the the songs inception. It's really lovely.
Just released on August 2nd, 2018, the video for "Who We Are" is a work of art on it's own. James goes back and forth from her current age, to her youth. You see her from both ages, being who she was born to be. Directed by Dustin Kirkendall, it captures the dreamy feeling through hazy, bright lighting and personifies the story James tells of authenticity.
