Song Review: Kira Hooks Provides Introspection in "Are You The Girl"

Let’s set the scene: you’re sitting at home drinking tea and contemplating who you’ll be when you’re older.  You think about the wisdom you would impart to your current self. Suddenly, you’re diving into a montage of dreamy scenes.  You’re in the sky, grazing the moon with your hands, rearranging stars, and smiling wistfully. This is where my mind takes me when I hear “Are You The Girl” by Kira Hooks, just released on April 17th, 2018.

As a person who finds herself going through “growing pains” quite frequently, I find this song to be absolutely lovely.  In my interpretation, it serves as an anthem of sorts to just remember that no matter what you experience, the best you can do is to be yourself, and to do what makes you happy.  Think of it as a love-letter to yourself in which you tell yourself to try, to be happy, and to be honest in your endeavors. We can all use a little bit more self-love. Life is too short, and Hooks taps into that through her lyrics.

“Are You The Girl” begins with a tinkering melody, transporting you into Hooks’ world.  When the first verse breaks in, it brings a rhythm section with it that showcases jazzy melodies sung in this songstress’ beautiful alto voice.  When you reach the chorus, you can feel her desire to get back in touch with herself, to do what she loves, and to live the best truth that she can.  In the second verse, horns make an entrance, further brightening the lyrics about changing the world.  But don’t stop listening there, because the bridge is stunning!  It’s jazzy, upbeat, positive, and really helps the arrangement take flight, transporting you through the last chorus to a dreamy soundscape in the sky.  “Are You The Girl” ends with meditative, trailing harmonies that land you gently back on the ground.
