Song Premiere: Nilka's "Sandcastle" Dreamscape
Nilka has created a beautiful dreamscape in her latest single, Sandcastle, being released on July 6th. The first time I heard it, I found myself being pulled into the feeling it gave me. I fell in love with how ambient it was. It rushed me into an ocean's tide and dropped me gently on a sandbar by the end; only making me need to listen again.
Sandcastle gives the listener a note of caution that love, and relationships in general, are fragile. It alludes to the struggle we all have in life to pretend that we have it all figured out- no matter what's going on beneath our exterior shell. Nilka poetically reminds us that each tower we build around us is made of sand though. No matter how much time or energy we spend on our exterior appearance, it can be knocked over by a wave, or another person, in minutes...leaving us vulnerable.
In the first verse Nilka tells the listener that she is a hunter, going on to say that someone will sink or swim in the end. I can feel that calm determination in both the words and through the dream-like instrumentation. It brings me back to my first real heartbreak when I felt the need to somehow win. I remember putting on a front and trying to seem like I was okay when really I was falling apart on the inside. Nilka captured that. She captured the chaos of my thoughts during that time. Her song took me back in time to those days, and then pulled me forward to remind me that I am only human and that I can choose to sink or swim through life. Check it out below:
