Funk-fueled rock group Spirits Republic is back on our radar with the release of the new video for their song “Prize.”  We at Nashville Offbeat saw the trio in July last year, groovin’ at Twin Kegs II, and knew it wouldn’t be our last encounter.  Now, the boys have a shiny new album, Hourglass, set for release this Friday the 16th, to wow and astound your ear holes.

I have had the great pleasure of being able to jam with guitarist and lead vocalist Russell Somer and bassist Ricky DeMeo on one or two occasions, and can tell you firsthand that these are some highly talented players.  They make use of intricate arrangements that meld with a jam-band-esque freedom, while keeping it all heavily steeped in an attitude of funk. “Prize,” and its visual accompaniment, achieve this aesthetic with ease.

The video features the band playing in Somer’s garage/rehearsal space, cut with kaleidoscope-like outdoor and driving scenes, giving an overall feeling of psychedelic displacement and trippiness (you may want to break out the sticky-icky for this one, gang).  The song itself moves from uptempo verses of head-bobbing fun, to chilled-out jam sections, to heavier, more powerful choruses and refrains. It all fits together seamlessly, and the finished product looks and sounds fantastic. Nice work, fellas!

So!  What are you waiting for?  Click all these links! Watch the video, visit their website, like their Facebook page, follow them on Spotify!  Keep up with these guys! They are “offbeat” in the best sense of the word!
