The Ivins Kick Ass
Alt-Rockers called The Ivins bring a fantastic mix of heaviness and pop to feast your ears upon. Influenced by the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, 30 Seconds To Mars, and Stereophonics, and drawing comparisons to The Killers and Arctic Monkeys, this band drives hard and keeps the energy levels cranked to 11.
Founded by brothers Jim and Jack Ivins (guitar/vocals and drums, respectively), The Ivins have previously been based in Richmond, VA and New York City, before landing here in Music City. Their latest release, The Code Duello (2017), is a full-length album packed with rocking jams, heavy riffs, and bombastic beats and rhythms. The album came together with the help of several award-winners and nominees, such as Michael Rosen (AFI, Papa Roach), Mark Needham (Imagine Dragons, The Killers), and Anthony “Rocky” Gallo (John Legend, Carrie Underwood), to name a few. The end result is a fine-tuned project that commands attention and exemplifies the band’s passion and drive.
Simply put, it kicks ass.
One song that caught my attention immediately was “Stockholm Syndrome.” It leads with a wonderfully, subtly distorted bass line, which struck right at my rhythm-junkie sensibility (can’t get enough of that crunch!). The guitars in the chorus create a wall of power strong enough to knock you back on your tuckus. The instrumental section, full of delightfully ethereal delay effects, exits into a Foo Fighters-esque break before taking you to the final chorus and outro jam. This song is an artfully-created rocker that will get you head-bangin’ from the get-go.
You can find The Code Duello on iTunes and Spotify! The Ivins will be performing at the next Nashville Offbeat showcase on February 28th at The 5 Spot. You won’t want to miss this dynamic group in the flesh!
